January Magazine

I'm extremely grateful to the folks at January magazine for naming "The Great White Bear" as one of the best non-fiction books of 2011. In a glowing review, India Wilson wrote that, "Arguably, Mulvaney is well on his way to being one of the ranking conservation writers of his generation. He writes alternately with joy and like his heart is bleeding and, in his passion, he carries us along." Wow. Thank you very much indeed. Read More

ice bears, again

For reasons that are unclear to me, there has been a sudden resurgence in media interest in my book. Rather than analyze this endlessly, I'm just happy to go along for the ride. Here's one I did recently, on the Relevant Radio Network, which I especially enjoyed. I was particularly grateful that the host, Sean Herriott, very kindly and unexpectedly asked me about my parents at the very end. My segment begins at about 29:50. Read More

A couple more reviews, and some thoughts they prompt

Reviews of The Great White Bear still trickle in, including two recent blogs. This one, on a blog called Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears, took a straightforward approach, and focused on the remarkable nature of polar bears - which is great, as that is what I had wanted more than anything to convey. Read More

New Review of "The Great White Bear"

I enjoyed a new review of my book that was just published in Open Letters Monthly. It's lengthy and thoughtful. I'll post extracts on the book's page on this site, but in the meantime, you can check out the full review here

Sometimes it all goes just right

I have conducted maybe a dozen or so interviews over the past couple of weeks on radio stations across the United States, talking about polar bears generally and of course The Great White Bear specifically.  Read More

Kieran at Harvard

I was fortunate enough to be asked to give a talk at the Harvard Museum of Natural History on Saturday. Many thanks to Tom Scanlon for proffering the invitation and being such a wonderful host. And thanks also to my good friend David Schullinger-Krause for the visual documentation.
